Children tend to fall often, especially when they are just learning how to walk. Sometimes when they fall, they can hit their tooth and damage it or even knock it out of place. Our dentists, Drs. Hawkins, Smith and Hassinger, are happy to help you in this situation by telling you exactly what to do. In fact, you should do these things in the following situations:

-When your child knocks a tooth loose: Call our office to see what to do next. We might recommend taking a dental X-ray to make sure the tooth can heal properly on its own. If everything is alright, you will need to give your child a soft-foods diet to let the tooth reattach to the underlying bone.

-When your child knocks a baby tooth out: There is no cause for alarm. Although the missing tooth will impair the speech and chewing a bit, it won’t cause any long-term damage. The permanent tooth will replace the missing tooth soon enough.

-When your child knocks a permanent tooth out: Retrieve the tooth, but only hold it by the crown. Then, rinse the tooth with warm water, but don’t scrub it. Call our office immediately and schedule an emergency appointment. Keep the tooth alive by putting it in a cup of milk or a cup of saltwater. Bring the tooth with you to the appointment.
