We at Hawkins Dental Group love teeth. That’s why we’ve devoted our careers to dentistry. We’re not the only ones. For thousands of years, humans have been concerned with the health and preservation of their smiles. Here are some fascinating historical facts about dentistry:
-The first concrete evidence that dentistry existed is from 14,000 years ago: that of an ancient infected tooth cleaned with flint medical tools in prehistoric Italy.
-In 5000 B.C., a Sumerian manuscript suggested that “tooth worms” are the perpetrator of dental decay. This proposal wasn’t proven wrong until the 1700s.
-The first toothbrush arrived on the scene in 1600 BC, invented by the Chinese. It was constructed from pig hair and animal bone – a design that lasted thousands of years.
-In the Middle Ages, dentists were called “barbers”. Not only did they clean and care for teeth but they also performed basic medical procedures and – you guessed it: they cut hair.
-Paul Revere, the same man who rode through the night to warn Colonial troops that the British were coming, was also taught in the ways of dentistry by the first dentist in America, John Baker.
-In 1776, during the Battle of Breed’s Hill, Paul Revere recognized his fallen friend, Dr. Joseph Warren, by looking at a dental bridge he constructed for him in his mouth. This is the first known case of post-mortem dental forensics.
-Until the 1880s, toothpaste was sold in boxes, bottles, jars and pots. The invention of the metal toothpaste tube completely changed that around.
